The league fined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization a quarter of a million dollars today for contact with players that was deemed “inappropriate” during the lockout. The NFL declined to comment and the Bucs haven’t issued a statement yet.

However, according to NFL.com:

“Bucs coach Raheem Morris said Sept. 12 that he had called two players during the 4½-month lockout, when such contact wasn’t permissible. Morris said he called tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. to congratulate him on the birth of his child and phoned Aqib Talib after the cornerback went to jail in connection to a shooting in Texas.”

250-grand? For just keeping tabs with a player at a life milestone in one case, and trying to check in with one who’s in major trouble? Seems a bit steep and rather draconian on Roger Goodell’s part, don’t you think?

Mr. Goodell, tear down this wall of excessive and unjustified fines.

At press time the Bucs were losing 31-3 to the San Francisco 49ers with 3 minutes left in the third.
